딥테크에 기회 있다 … '韓美 빅샷' 창업 러시 글자크기 조절 에릭 슈밋은 로켓회사 CEO로 AI·로봇·우주항공에 주로 몰려 새로운 시장 열리자 선점 나서 글로벌 테크업계 ‘빅샷’이 인공지능(AI), 로봇, 우주·항공 등 딥테크 창업에 연달아 출사표를 던지고 있다. 2000년을 전후해 모바일 디바이스 시장이 급성장할 때처럼 산업 패러다임 전환기에 일시적으로 열리는 ‘이노베이션 윈도(혁신의 기회)’ 시대가 열렸다는 분석이 나온다. 2017년 구글 회장에서 물러난 후 투자자로 활동해온 슈밋이 회사 경영에 나선 건 8년 만이다. 렐러티비티스페이스는 3차원(3D) 프린팅으로 로켓을 제작하는 회사다. 슈밋 CEO는 직원들과의 사전 미팅에서 회사 프로젝트에 강한 열정을 보인 것으로 전해졌다. 구글 공동창업자인 래리 페이지도 최근 다이너토믹스라는 이름의 인공지능(AI) 스타트업을 설립했다. AI 모델로 실제 물리적 제품을 만드는 사업 모델을 구상 중이다. 오픈AI 최고기술책임자(CTO)였던 미라 무라티, 오픈AI 공동창업자 일리야 수츠케버도 각각 AI 스타트업을 세웠다. 테크업계 유명 인사의 창업이 이어지는 건 한국도 마찬가지다. 국내 유명 투자자인 류중희 퓨처플레이 대표는 리얼월드라는 이름의 로봇 스타트업을 준비하고 있다. 소프트웨어 기업 올라웍스 창업자인 류 대표는 인텔에 회사를 매각한 후 초기투자자로 활동해오다가 다시 창업에 나섰다. 김일두 전 카카오브레인 대표(오픈리서치 창업), 송기영 수아랩 창업자(홀리데이로보틱스 창업) 등도 각각 AI와 로봇 분야에서 새로운 회사를 차렸다. ◇‘이노베이션 윈도’ 열렸다 이들의 창업 영역은 주로 AI, 로봇, 우주·항공 등 딥테크 분야에 쏠려 있다. 챗GPT 등장 후 AI 성능이 빠르게 좋아지고 도입을 시도하는 곳도 늘었지만 아직 대중의 삶을 근본적으로 바꾸는 핵심 앱은 나오지 않았다. 투자업계 관계자는 “테크 영역의 투자자나 경영자라면 천재일우의 기회를 놓치고 싶지 않을 것”이라며 “시장 형성 초기인 지금 우위를 점한다면 새로운 구글, 메타, 테슬라가 될 수도 있다”고 했다. AI 발전으로 휴머노이드 등 로봇 분야도 빠르게 발전할 것으로 예상된다. 2세대(2G) 등 모바일 전성시대 때 이용자 선점과 비즈니스 모델이 중요하던 것과 달리 최근 AI와 로봇이 주도하는 시장은 차별화된 첨단 기술을 확보했는지가 관건이다. 이런 점에서 스타트업 창업과 투자 유치 경험, 산·학·연 네트워크 등을 갖춘 인사가 유리한 고지를 점하고 있다는 분석이 나온다. 국내 대학 소속 교수들의 창업도 늘어나고 있다. 2023년 창업한 대학교수는 466명으로 3년 전(315명)보다 크게 늘었다. ‘스타 창업자’가 시장 자금을 흡수하면서 신규 창업자의 성공 가능성이 그만큼 줄어들고 있다는 분석도 나온다. 과거엔 이용자만 모을 수 있으면 창업자가 유명하지 않아도 적지 않은 투자를 받았다. 최근엔 연쇄 창업자나 교수가 이끄는 스타트업에만 자금이 풀린다. 지난해 시드투자(초기투자) 1위는 수아랩 창업자 송 대표의 휴머노이드 스타트업 홀리데이로보틱스(175억원), 2위는 게임업계 1세대인 남궁훈 대표가 세운 AI 플랫폼 아이즈엔터테인먼트(160억원)였다. 고은이 기자 koko@hankyung.com 2 3
