Trying out this week’s sip, Simon Collins gives his verdict on the Tinnie of the Week and whether it’s worth cracking one with a mate. BEER NAME? WA’s first dedicated non-alcoholic beer brand, founded by Michael Payne, who’d decided to rethink his relationship with drink after a booze-related trip to the hospital a couple of years ago. Payne enlisted Fremantle brewer Matt Crockett to come up with a recipe inspired by American pale ales for Lightning Minds’ first release, which comes in under 0.5 per cent ABV and is contract brewed in NSW. WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT IT? Even without Dry July, no and low alcohol beers are enjoying a boom as drinkers either cut down or cut off their alcohol consumption. For some, it’s about taking booze out of their lives completely. For many, it’s about being responsible on the night. “Why not just drink water?” More than one drinker has told me that they “delete” a glass of water in an instant, before returning to beer and therefore have not really given themselves a break. A good “nolo” beer not only offers that pause from full-strength beverages but can also be an enjoyable experience in itself. That’s where Lightning Minds comes in. There are a few tasty 0.5 per cent and below craft beers on the market, but Crockett used tropical hops and four different malts to create a pleasingly balanced and bitter pale ale. Lightning Minds pours golden orange and cloudy, offers tropical notes and assertive bitterness, and — most importantly — has decent mouthfeel so all you’re missing is the potential hangover. SHOULD I SHARE IT? No need to share a 330ml tinnie, except to give a mate a sip to see if he might make this his “sensible” option. And Lightning Minds might be that perfect fridge filler for when non-drinking friends drop around. WHAT’S THE DAMAGE? Lightning Minds pale ale goes for $5 a single can, $15 for a four-pack and $70 for a carton of 24. RATING?
